Global Need's Global Cover begins Haiti Rebuild Effort PDF Print E-mail

Global Need's “Global Cover” has begun the process of addressing the long term need in Haiti- rebuilding housing. Incorporating the concept of the Structural Insulated Panel (SIP), Global Need's "Global Cover" plans on building a SIP manufacturing facilty in Haiti.

This will do more than just provide housing, it will provide much-needed jobs. Haitian citizens will be trained and certified in the SIP Construction process.

Global Need Global Cover Housing Goal for Haiti Relief:

To manufacture and erect walls for thousands of 24x32 homes for less than $5.00 per foot!

  1. Global Need Global Cover has developed engineered and fabricated the equipment necessary to erect a structural insulated panel (SIP) manufacturing facility in Haiti.
  2. The purpose is to produce panels for culturally acceptable housing that will meet or exceed U.S. Building Codes for wind loads in coastal Florida and the seismic codes in California.
  3. The program is complete with training for the production and erection of housing by the local labor force.
  4. Global Need Global Cover could be erecting housing within 15 days of their containers being located at the site and the curing of the required concrete slab foundation.
  5. Global Need Global Cover could be producing panels in country within 45 days of a manufacturing building/facility being established.
  6. One manufacturing facility can produce and erect wall panels for 6678 homes per year (24’ x 32’ or 768 sq. ft.). Roof trusses will be manufactured in country.

Cultural sensitivity is incorporated into all phases of the Global Need Global Cover process.

At full production, a one-cell SIPs manufacturing facility can produce sufficient amount of SIPs products to construct up to 2,400 moderately sized residential units per year. This is enough to fully employ all of the 180 installation crews to be trained and certified by Global Need Global Cover during the 18-month work-up phase. A two-cell, SIPs manufacturing facility can double the amount of material produced for residential construction.

In addition to training and certifying Haiti citizens in the construction of SIPS-based homes, Global Need Global Cover strives to make those same homes affordable to the manufacturing facility’s employees and to the housing construction industry workers. This philosophy is similar to that of Mr. Henry Ford who paid his employees enough to ensure they could afford to purchase the automobiles they built and his vision helped create America’s middle class. A sizeable middle class helps stabilize governments and their economies.

Global Need Global Cover’s efforts in the development of human capital cannot be accomplished alone; however their unique manufacturing philosophy can be a model for others to follow and put into practice.

Scope of the Project

The project will consist of six major components.

  • Global Need Global Cover STRUCTURAL INSULATED PANEL MANUFACTURING FACILITY
  • Global Need Global Cover EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE FACILITY
  • Global Need Global Cover TRAINING FACILITY
  • Global Need Global Cover DISTRIBUTION FACILITY
  • Global Need Global Cover FIBER CEMENT MANUFACTURING PLANT
  • 1000 HOMES built to temporarily house displaced indigenous people while a planned community is built in the area they just moved out of.
